POSTDOCTORAL VISITING FELLOW / DATA ANALYST

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institutes of Health

Research Triangle Park, NC, United States

As a member of {SET}group led by Dr. Kyle Messier (Stadtman Investigator) at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, I led the development of an R package for parallel geospatial processing based on subregional partitioning and designing a fully reproducible, national-scale high-resolution PM2.5 prediction pipeline. Other projects as a contributor include the open-source software development for downloading, processing, and calculating large-scale environmental datasets and national-level pesticide modeling in the United States.

09/2021 - 08/2023

AFFILIATED RESEARCHER

National Cancer Center of Korea

Remote /

Goyang, Gyeonggi, Korea (Republic of)

Collaborating with Dr. Sun-Young Kim, I led a study on the spatiotemporal shift in cluster detection results of lung and stomach cancer over fifteen years (1999-2013) at the district level in Republic of Korea, which was published in Environmental Research. I also contributed to improving R workflow for 300+ geographic variables for air pollution prediction models.

06/2020 - 06/2023

RESEARCH ASSISTANT

University of Oregon

Eugene, OR, USA

I worked with Dr. Hui Luan at the University of Oregon and Dr. Yusuf Ransome at Yale University. I assisted in web data collection, multi-source data compilation, spatial point pattern analysis of racism-related events, and R-Shiny app development for local syndemic modeling.

01/2023 - 04/2023

INSTRUCTOR

University of Oregon

Eugene, OR, USA

I taught GIScience I [Geographic Information Science I], which is a prerequisite course in Geography and Spatial Data Science major for subsequent courses such as Advanced GIS, Remote Sensing, Geospatial Data Science Application, GIS and Public Health, and Spatial Analysis, as the instructor of record. I restructured the previous course structure to incorporate recent advances in GIS, while maintaining the connection between topics of this and subsequent courses. Fifty-seven students, including from freshmen to seniors, enrolled.

08/2017 - 09/2019

RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Seoul National University

Seoul, Korea (Republic of)

I worked with Dr. Daehyun Kim at Department of Geography in Seoul National University. I took part of quantitative analysis of spatial-environmental datasets in Sindu coastal dunes. As an affiliated research assistant, I am working on the impact of spatial autocorrelation in the socioeconomic data and the application of machine learning to spatial data.

01/2018 - 12/2018

RESEARCHER

National Cancer Center

Goyang, Gyeonggi

Korea (Republic of)

I worked with Dr. Sun-Young Kim at National Cancer Center (Korea). I involved in computing geographic variables for national exposure model of air pollutants (PM10 and NO2) and investigated the association between transportation volumes and air pollution using GIS. I also led a research project on the spatial heterogeneity of the association between PM10 pollution and low birth weight in Korea.

Education

09/2019 - 06/2023

Ph.D. (Geography)

University of Oregon

Eugene, OR

I worked with Dr. Hui (Henry) Luan in the Department of Geography at the University of Oregon. My Ph.D. dissertation extends the spatial disparity in effects of unemployment and greenspace exposure on mental illness mortality across three spatial scales including the continental U.S., the Pacific Northwest U.S., and the State of Washington.

Projects I worked with him and his colleagues are:

   - Spatial analysis of the association between socioeconomic factors, HIV, HCV, and COVID-19

   - Spatiotemporal association between mortality and unemployment in the US

03/2015 - 08/2017

M.A. (Geography)

Seoul National University

Seoul, Korea (Republic of)

I worked with Dr. Key-Ho Park (Seoul National University). I was trained to analyze extensive spatial datasets, geovisualization, and machine learning with spatial data. My thesis was on the improvement of an imputation model based on ensembled spatiotemporal Kriging.

03/2009 - 02/2015

Seoul National University

B.A. summa cum laude

(Geography major,

European Regional Studies minor)

Seoul, Korea (Republic of)

I involved in several research projects in the Korea Research Institute of Human Settlement, Department of Geography, and the Creative Korea 21 Initiative at Seoul National University. I worked on data collection and cleaning of field geographic data, statistical analysis of data from surveys and government statistics, satellite image classification, and visualization.
